Emergency Evacuation Diagrams

What are Emergency Evacuation Diagrams

Basically, Evacuation Diagrams are wayfinding maps used to direct any person in a building or area away from danger to a safe place. These diagrams must be designed in accordance with strict guidelines and regulations set-down within the AS3745:2010 and they must include a number of minimum elements such as fire extinguishers, fire hydrants and other important information.

Where Should Evacuation Diagrams Be Installed and How?

It is crucial that the orientation, position and location of diagrams are compliant with the standard as well as the materials and installation of each sign so as not to compromise safety; for example, simply drilling a hole into a fire door to install an evacuation sign can dramatically reduce its performance capability. Altering a fire door may render the door non-compliant and the door will need to be repaired or more likely replaced.

Safety Graphics provides professional, fully compliant and well-designed evacuation diagrams for display in common areas of buildings and sites.

What Are The Requirements For Evacuation Diagrams Inclusions?

The following shall be included in each evacuation diagram as a minimum but there are other items that can be included in certain situations:

  • A pictorial representation of the floor or area, of specific minimum dimensions.
  • The title ‘EVACUATION DIAGRAM’.
  • The ‘YOU ARE HERE’ location/s.
  • The designated exits in the facility, which shall be green and uses the correct pictograms.
  • The following communications equipment, where installed.
    • Warden intercommunication points (WIPs).
    • Manual call points (MCPs), which shall be red and emergency call points (ECPs).
    • Main controls/panels for the occupant warning equipment.
  • Hose Reels.
  • Hydrants.
  • Extinguishers, which shall be the appropriate colour as specified in AS/NZS 1841.1.
  • Fire blankets.
  • Fire indicator panel (FIP), if provided.
  • Refuges, if present.
  • Validity date.
  • Location of assembly area(s).
  • A legend, which shall reflect the symbols used.
